To Tame the Inevitability or News on the Web

Media provides recipients with information part of which is subsequently further distributed by these recipients. What are the ways in which news is socialised, i.e. where and why people find news, what and why they do with it, how and where they send the news further and what the benefits – including social benefits – are for the participants in the process?

Similar questions have been posed by researchers who however usually explore the a priori assumed distribution channels and their conclusions regarding the user’s motives are equivocal. While applying the qualitative research method, I made an attempt at identifying an answer to these questions on the Polish ground.

I came to the conclusion that the interactions between the network users remind of a traditional conversation also with respect to the news: the latest events are a pretext to begin a conversation, develop a discussion, and express joy or outrage. Such interactions are also a source of entertainment and favour keeping up the relationships. Social media is used in exactly the same way and with the same objective in mind.

I will present more details during 8th Central and European Media and Communication Conference CEECOM2015, 12-14 June 2015 in Zagreb. This year’s theme is “The Digital Media Challenge”. Representatives of the largest universities in the Central and Eastern Europe formed the organizing committee of the event.

The conference will be held at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Political Science, Lepušićeva 6 St., Croatia.

My lecture is scheduled on Friday, 12th of June, 4h P.M.
